Today We Rescued Your Dog
by Pat Closher

Today we rescued your dog. We don't know where you got him from - maybe you saw him in a pet store window or maybe one of your neighbors bred a few litters a year just to make some vacation money or because they loved their dogs so much that of course they wanted to have puppies. We don't know much about how you cared for him either, although our vet thought that for such a young dog, his teeth were in pretty bad shape.

The way we heard the story, you moved out of state and didn't want to take him with you. You left him at your grandparents. Maybe you thought a lively, handsome dog was just the thing for them, and under better circumstances it might have been. Maybe they have been cleaning up your messes for your entire life and an unwanted dog was just another mess to clean up.

Did you know they were going to keep him outside? At least it was a pretty mild winter. There were no heavy snows, not much heavy winter rain and only a few days of bitter cold. But for all of those weeks he had no companionship, no care, no love.

For some reason, your grandparents took him to the shelter. Maybe a neighbor complained about him or maybe their own health gave out or maybe they just got tired of him. You know the local shelter is a kill shelter, don't you? You know that their own statistics indicate that about half of the dogs that enter are killed, don't you?

Maybe your grandparents thought he would be adopted quickly. He is a purebred, after all. No one was interested in him, though, maybe since he's an adult dog and not a cute little puppy. No one contacted the purebred rescue group either. They probably would have placed him quickly, since he really is a great boy.

The shelter is a clean place and they take good care of the dogs.  They get good food and they're bathed and brushed. It's still a shelter though, and is noisy and chaotic and frightening. He spent two months there in that confusion, away from everyone and everything he had known.

One day, we saw him on the shelter web site. We called and asked about him. The shelter workers were so happy to hear from us and were delighted to agree to bring him to a local pet store where they do adoptions. Do you want to know why they were so accommodating? He was scheduled to be killed that afternoon. He didn't know that, but
the shelter workers certainly did. It hurt them and he felt that, so he knew something was wrong.

All of a sudden, though, the shelter workers were happy and excited and so was he. They bathed him and brushed his coat. We think they probably told him this was it - his big chance, or maybe he just knew it somehow. When we met him, we all fell in love.

He had to go to the vet to be neutered, of course, but then he came home. He has his very own 13 year-old boy. You know, it's almost like watching one of those old Lassie movies, seeing how well they've bonded. He's got good food and his own toys. He's taken on walks three times a day, is regularly groomed and is taken to the vet for needed care. We'll be with him always, even if we have to make that last, difficult decision, because, you see, he is our dog and we are his family.

He has a good heart you know, but then he is a dog, so that's to be expected. He's probably forgiven you and, with a dog's grace, doesn't even remember you dumped him. He'd probably even be willing to greet you at the Rainbow Bridge. But you know what? He'll greet us and go with us at the Bridge, and then he'll be with us forever, because he's our dog and we're his family.

Here in this house......

I will never know the loneliness I hear in the barks of the other dogs 'out there'.
I can sleep soundly, assured that when I wake my
world will not have changed.
I will never know hunger, or the fear of not knowing if I'll eat. I will not shiver in the cold, or grow weary from the heat.  I will feel the sun's heat, and the rain's coolness, and be allowed to smell all that can reach my nose.  My fur will shine, and never be dirty or matted.
 Here in this house...

There will be an effort to communicate with me on my level.  I will be talked to and, even if I don't understand,  I can enjoy the warmth of the words.  I will be given a name so that I may know who I am among many.  My name will be used in joy, and I will love the sound of it!
 Here in this house...

I will never be a substitute for anything I am not.  I will never be used to improve peoples' images of themselves.   I will be loved because I am who I am, not someone's idea of who I should be.  I will never suffer for someone's anger, impatience, or stupidity.   I will be taught all the things I need to know to be loved by all.
If I do not learn my lessons well, they will look to my teacher for blame.
 Here in this house...

I can trust arms that hold, hands that touch...knowing that, no matter what they do, they do it for the good of me.   If I am ill, I will be doctored.  If scared, I will be calmed.  If sad, I will be cheered.  No matter what I look like, I will be considered beautiful and thought to be of value.  I will never be cast out because I am too old, too ill, too unruly, or not cute enough.  My life is a responsibility, and not an afterthought.  I will learn that humans can almost, sometimes, be as kind and as fair as dogs.
 Here in this house...

 I will belong.
 I will be home.

Beauty (now Bee)
was adopted by a wonderful, awesome family right from the holding facility!  She and Rufus are livin' LARGE!   "Just wanted to drop a line and let you know that we are Beauty's new family!  We already had a male German Shepherd (Rufus) that we had adopted at the pound about 2 years ago.  We wanted to get him a pal, so we went to the Animal Shelter this past weekend and fell in love with Beauty!  We brought her home yesterday.  She immediately met Rufus, got a bath and brushing (hey, she needed the spa treatment!), and we gave her water and food (she was VERY hungry!).  After a while of sniffing each other, Rufus and Beauty started to get along just fine!   My husband said that she is "just like a woman - comes in and takes over!"  I agree!  We took them both out for a walk in the evening and she was a pleasure - no pulling or barking after other dogs (like Rufus does!). Today, we will slowly introduce her to Penster, our cat (he lives indoors but since the dogs will be spending a lot of time indoors as well, they need to get acquainted!).  She loves our kids to death (and they love her!) and rolls over on her back to have it scratched all the time!  This weekend is her visit to the vet.  All in all, we are thrilled to have her as a member of our family.  Giselle & Manny & Family

Hey Sue, Thanks for all the great pic's. The one common thread that I can see in all of them is their smiles. I think I can speak for everyone when I say thank you for all the love you gave them. I would say Clyde's main breed is happy. All he knows is love.  Thank You for that.

Buddy,
a 3 year old English Mastiff from Katrina was adopted through Bullmastiff Rescue, Nikki, in Louisiana.  Hurray for Buddy!!!

Blue, another lucky neogirl that found her way to a wonderful family in Florida!!  Here's the story of Blue...

I recently adopted Blue, a Neopolitan Mastiff who had been found wandering the streets in southern Florida.  She had gone from the ASPCA, to a Cane Corso breeder who took her out of the goodness of her heart, to me.  She is the most loyal, most loving dog ever.  She was wild as can be when I got her but now she is at my feet where she loves to be, getting her tummy rubbed with my toes.  During the day and at night she guards the house - usually she is up about three times a night to walk the perimeter, then back to bed with me.  Every weekend we go to the dog parks where she makes lots of new friends, and once in a while we go to Petsmart, where she is always surrounded by a flock of kids who want to stroke her soft fur  All it took with Blue was a firm hand.  Once she knew who the Alpha male was, she was perfectly happy in her role.  One thing about a giant breed: they have nothing to prove.   As for me, I am from Connecticut living in Orlando, and grew up on a farm from when Connecticut HAD farms.  I have had spaniels, retrievers,
schnauzers, doxins, pit bulls and everything in between, but none of them have made me feel the love that Blue makes me feel with her total dedication.  I think that the smartest thing you have posted on your site is that this isn't a breed for everyone.  They need a lot of exercize and a firm hand.  It wasn't hard to tell that Blue came from a place where she was the boss.    God bless you and your gift to these noble creatures,
Bob Brady

ADOPTED!!! Sasha now enjoys her new life with all her new pals!  SASHA is a 1 year old female neapolitan mastiff.  Her owners are moving and need to find a new home for Sasha.  She is up to date on shots and heartworm preventative and spayed.  She is blue with natural ears.  If you interested in Sasha, live in the Miami area (or are willing to travel to meet her and pick her up after you have been home checked), will allow Sasha to live indoors and have a fenced yard, please fill out an application form.

What?  You wear a bib when you eat lobster don't you? Could I be any happier? Uh Oh.    ADOPTED!!  Axle was adopted by Lorianna and Greg and now lives in downtown Houston.  Check out that happy smile!!  AXLE is a very sweet 7 month old bullmastiff mix.  He is neutered and up to date on shots.  He needs a bit of training and is a typical pup.  Housetrained and knows some commands.

TYCHE (Greek for Fate/Chance) was adopted by Francine and Jimmy in Florida right from the facility in Georgia because there was not enough time or rescources to get her to Texas.  Tyche is a beautiful neo girl that needed help and Francine and Jimmy drove the entire way to get her without too much info about her.  As you can see... she couldn't ask for anything more.  Special thanks to Francine and Jimmy for believing in Tyche and Kathy in Florida and Sue and Tracy in Georgia for all their help.

ADOPTED!!! Daisy (aka Nevaeh) has found her forever home in The Woodlands... She is very much loved and has thrived and is getting over her issues with the help of Kim, Tom and the boys, and, of course... Moose her new lab buddy.  Isn't it wonderful that what was once considered disposable and didn't matter to someone, is now happy, healthy and loved?   NEVAEH is a very sweet 2-3 year old female Neapolitan Mastiff.  She is blue with natural ears and a full tail.   She is spayed and up to date on shots.  She is very tiny for a neo, is great with other dogs and children.  Nevaeh has confinement issues and is experiencing separation anxiety and will need someone willing to work with her on these problems.  Nevaeh (spell it backwards) is in Houston.

ADOPTED!!!!  Manchy has found her forever home and is so happy and loved with Amber, Guy and MaKayla.  What a happy ending and new beginning for this beautiful sweet AB girl...  MANCHA is a 3-4 year old female American Bulldog that was abandoned with her bullmastiff buddy.  She is spayed and up to date on shots.  Very healthy other than a bit of sunburn on her face that needs to heal.  She is very sweet and friendly and craves attention and loves to give you kisses.  She also loves to lay on her back and get a good belly scratch.  Very amenable to everything as far as bathing, nail clipping, ear cleaning, etc.  She knows basic commands and responds well, but needs a firm hand when being walked.  She would do best being the only dog in the household and her temperament with cats is unknown.  Very special thanks to Vance at Texas American Bulldogs for his help in spreading the word about Mancha needing a home.

Taz has been adopted!!   He is a 10 month old male bullmastiff mix, approximately 85 pounds.  He is listed as a courtesy to his owners in Baytown, TX.  He is up to date on shots and heartworm preventative and will be neutered prior to placement.

ADOPTED!! Bob (aka Bubba) LOVES his new acreage and home.  He, Trixie, BoBo, B and Ken share a beautiful space in the country.  He even has a pond to swim in and he and Trixie run to their heart's content.  BoBo just watches... lol!  Lucky, lucky dogs!!

Bubba is a 3 1/2 year old fawn male english mastiff.  He is neutered, up to date on shots and heartworm preventative.  He is a very energetic boy, and needs a refresher course in basic obedience, but very friendly and loving.  Has lived with children, but because of his exuberance, older children preferred.

Photobucket PhotobucketPhotobucket ADOPTED!!  Bonnie found a wonderful home with Shannon and Bella and loves her new couch!  Special thanks to Ilse and Pat who took such wonderful care of Bonnie.  Bonnie is a 1 year old female fawn english mastiff. She is spayed, up to date on shots and heartworm preventative. She is housebroken and kennel trained. Bonnie is very loving and is happiest when she is sitting with you on the couch, laying on you or putting her paw on your shoulder to give you a big hug. She will steal your heart within minutes of meeting her. Being still a pup, she does have lots of energy and still tends to chew if not watched and her attention redirected. She does not do well with small dogs but is great with larger dogs. She does great with small children (has lived with a 3 year old), but can knock them down & would do much better with older children to play with.

Photobucket  ADOPTED!!  Ali & Bryce are a beautiful female brindle  under a year old and a goofy 2 year old fawn male english mastiff pair.   Ali loves to play and is very sweet and loves cuddling with you. Needs some obedience training, but very willing to learn. Very obvious she lived only outdoors, but she has never had an accident in the house and loves being inside in the A/C, on a soft bed with all her new toys. Ali has been spayed, is up to date on her shots and all other medical has been completed. Ali will only be adopted with her special needs companion, Bryce who has been diagnosed with PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and will eventually be blind. There is nothing that can be done to stop the progression of this disease. He has also been neutered, as all rescues do, but in this case, it was especially important so as not to pass along the defective PRA genes, as all of his offspring would also eventually be blind. He came in with green goo covering his entire face from eye infections (along with every worm imaginable, coccidia, and severe ear and skin infections as did Ali). He needs eye drops every day and he has also been started on supplements to possibly slow down the progression of the PRA (although, of course, there is no medical evidence that these supplements work). Bryce is a very sweet, loving mastiff that wants nothing more than to be hugged on all day. He will only be adopted with Ali as he will need her when he loses his sight. And he really needs to find his forever home soon. There is no timeframe specified as to when he will completely lose his eyesight (his right eye has less sight than his left, and his left eye also has several cataracts), but he needs to be familiar with his surroundings for when he does. Not only will it take a very special person (or persons) to adopt a pair of mastiffs, but it will take an angel to take on a mastiff that will eventually be blind. Blind dogs do very well after losing their sight and Bryce will definitely be that way. I have started teaching him associative words (such as right, left, door, step) so that he will somewhat know what to expect when he hears this word. He loves to go for walks... and is great with every dog and person he meets. He does need some obedience training, but he learns quickly and listens very well. If there is someone out there that is looking for a wonderful pair of mastiffs to love... this is the pair!

ADOPTED!  Lacy is a 2 year old female brindle mastiff. She was abandoned in an apartment with her buddy the Chihuahua for a long period of time... and then he was taken away from her because she was heartworm positive and he was not. She is gaining weight, has been spayed and will undergo heartworm treatment shortly. She is very sweet with people but for right now is not very good about sharing her toys or space with other animals.

NERO WAS ADOPTED!!!! COURTESY POST - - NERO IS LOCATED NEAR TALLAHASSEE, FL.  Nero is a 2 year old male blue neapolitan mastiff with natural ears. He is very sweet and playful. He is neutered and up to date on shots and heartworm preventation. He has recently undergone cherry eye surgery. If you are interested in Nero, please contact Marlyne at marlyne@idhlaw.com for an adoption application. The adoption donation is $300. Please note that Nero is located in FLORIDA and you must be willing to drive to Florida if you are out of state.

ADOPTED!!!!  Remi has found his forever home with Deb and Lucy, the macaw.  What a happy mastiffboy!!!  REMI is a 2 year old male neutered english mastiff who was left in a shelter with his mate, Roxy. Fawn with a dark mask. He is up to date on his shots and heartworm preventative. Because of all the confusion surrounding his ending up in a shelter, he is very clingy and needs alot of one on one love and attention. Because of this, he will only be adopted to a family with no other animals, and who has the time to give to him. Children in the home must be over the age of 12. He is really a sweetheart and really deserves a family that will show him how life can be good.

ADOPTED!!!  Thanks to Toni in Houston, Rosie (aka Roxy) is now a spoiled member of her family.  Her and the kitties enjoy nothing more than snuggling with Toni and being treated like royalty!  ROXY is a 4-5 year old female spayed mastiff.  She is neutered and up to date on shots and heartworm preventative.  Her and her life long friend, Remy, were abandoned at the local animal shelter.  Roxy needs to lose a bit of weight, but other than that and a slight ear and skin infection is in great health. She is a sweetheart and gets along with everything.

ADOPTED!! Belladonna is one happy pup in her new home in Chicago! BELLA is a 1 year old female fawn english mastiff.  She is spayed and up to date on shots.

ADOPTED!! Emmie is finally home with her new family in Beaumont!!!  EMMIE is a 4 year old female schnauzer mix.  She is a very sweet girl, but a little shy at first until she gets to know you and then wants nothing more than to curl up beside you.  Her other favorite pastimes are rolling in the leaves and sitting in the sun.  She has been vet checked, is up to date on shots and spayed.   SPECIAL THANKS TO CONTINENTAL'S WAG (WELFARE ANIMAL GROUP) AND TO LYNDA ANDERSON FOR THEIR HELP WITH EMMIE!!!!!

Maddie & Hooch too full of turkey leftovers!

ADOPTED!! Maddie loves her new neobrother Hooch and is very happy and loved in her new home! MADDIE is a 1 year old fawn female english mastiff.  She is spayed and up to date on her shots.  She is a typical puppy and runs 24/7 and needs lots of attention.  She loves everyone and everything.

ADOPTED!!! SAGE is listed as a courtesy to her owners.  She is a 14 month old female, indoor dog, spayed and up to date on everything.  She has lived with cats, other dogs and children 12 and 14 years old.  Very sweet.  Sage and Bailey enjoying their new life together...

TIGGER IS ADOPTED!!  COURTESY POST - PLEASE CONTACT JANET FOR MORE INFORMATION ON TIGGER - -     I rescued Tigger almost 2 years ago. He is a Mastiff (probably Cane Corso) and Lab mix. He received his Rabies shot and boosters. He's been on Heartguard as long as I've had him. He is neutered. His tail and ears were never cropped. He had Happy Tail Syndrome as a puppy, but it has since healed. He does well on car rides, he was raised with other dogs including a chihuahua. He is excellent with my toddler and has never shown any signs of aggression. He will bark at the doorbell or when cars would pull up in our driveway. He usually calms at our saying it's OK. He loves to run outside and loved having his doggy door. Now that we have moved into an apartment with no yard and no place to walk, he is not happy. Playing chase, tug of war and chewing bones makes him extremely happy. He walks well on a leash and I've been easily able to pull a stroller and have him walk next to it many times. He has basic obedience and loves to please. He weighed 92 lbs at that last visit in May. The vet said he was as tall as he'll probably get, but may fill in a little more. He's never been a picky eater and lets me add kelp to his food. I've given him vitamins and brewers yeast and he takes them like treats. Of course, like any pup he lives for the occasional hot dog that falls off the grill. He is the perfect family dog!
